Happy St. Patricks Week! To celebrate my patron saint I’ve come up with a list of my best Irish vegan recipes all made using fresh local ingredients – and a token green smoothie because, you know, you can’t celebrate St. Patrick’s day with the colour green being involved!
These recipes include traditional meals still eaten my many Irish families like Shepherds pie, more old-fashioned recipes like boxty, and a healthy and compassionate take on the Irish stew. These Irish vegan recipes are hearty, warming and extremely healthy as they are full of fibre and nutrients from the many of colourful vegetables.
VEGAN SHEPHERD´S PIE
This Shepherds pie uses green or brown lentils instead of mince. The smoky earthiness of the lentils mixed with the finely chopped veg is a perfect substitute! It has bite and flavour and fills you up easily from all the fibre! The smooth and creamy mashed potato topping is out of this world! You can use some vegan cheese on top or even just nutritional yeast.

IRISH VEGETABLE STEW
Look at beautiful and colourful this stew is! A far cry from the old brown and beige stew we used to eat that had mostly dead animal bits in it. This one is full of life and will give you life! It’s also really quite simple with minimal ingredients. You can find the recipe here.
IRISH POTATO BOXTY
Probably the oldest recipe on this list. This is what Irish people used to eat when they couldn’t afford all the meat and dairy that we eat today. Potatoes were a staple of our diet so we used them in any way we could. I loved trying out this old recipe that happened to be accidentally vegan! No variation was needed. Find it here.
VEGAN PORRIDGE BREAD
This is my all time most successful blog post! You folks absolutely must love bread. This porridge bread is very similar to the old traditional brown bread that I remember both my Granny and my Mum baking. Brown bread is an. Irish staple and life just is not complete without it! This vegan porridge bread is a fantastic substitute and no Irish vegan home should be without this porridge bread. It takes around 5 minutes to prepare and the smell of baked bread is to die for.

GREEN DETOX SMOOTHIE
This delicious vibrant green smoothie is obviously as Irish as it gets with the coconut water and the pineapple! No but really I just wanted to throw in something fun and green – just like the crazy green rivers and beers and ice-creams that pop up all over America for Paddy’s day. Only this smoothie will make you feel better instead of worse. ^^ Maybe something that would be beneficial to take the day after Paddy’s Day if you´ve overdone it on the green beers…Get this healthy herby recipe here.
Agus sin é (that’s that). If you guys have any Irish recipe requests please comment down below and let me know what you’d like to see. Please like and share this blog post to get and get healthy Irish recipe ideas to Irish people, Irish emigrants and Irish diaspora around the globe.
